Stuart Coal, a company founded in 1996 by the Stuart family, has a
rich history spanning nearly three decades. Initially, the family's involvement in
earthworks began in the 1970s through A. Stuart Earthworks. Later, they expanded
into two mining operations, Stuart Mining, in the 1980s, which were subsequently
sold off. After an 8-year hiatus due to a trade restriction agreement,
Stuart Coal was established in 1996, capitalizing on a mining
resource acquired in the Delmas, Mpumalanga area.
In 1998, Stuart Coal broke ground on the Weltervreden operation,
which has since expanded to include adjacent resources and reserves, such as the
East Block and South Block, collectively boasting reserves exceeding 50 million
tons. These mines operate as open-pit truck and shovel operations, with two large
DMS processing plants. The processed products are then loaded onto road haul trucks
and transported to various clients.
Stuart Coal's clientele spans a diverse range of industries,
including petrochemical producers, electricity suppliers, platinum, steel,
agricultural, and other sectors.
